A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the southern region of the Philippines late on Saturday night, causing damage to infrastructure and triggering tsunami warnings across the country. The quake was recorded at a depth of 32 kilometres, approximately 21 kilometres north-east of Hinatuan municipality on Mindanao island.

Residents of coastal areas were immediately warned of the danger of large waves and ordered to evacuate their homes. Over 500 aftershocks have been recorded in the region since the initial earthquake, some measuring as powerful as magnitude-6.5.

This is second major earthquake to affect the southern Philippines in the space of a month, shaking buildings and causing damage to properties and structures across the region. Residents in affected areas have now returned to their homes.
