Cunningham Lindsey responds to explosion at Zygi Naval Base, Cyprus

11 Jul 11

A wildfire spread to this naval base and detonated several tonnes of confiscated Iranian explosive, stored at this facility.

Several fatalities are reported as well as widespread area damage over several square kilometres. Damaged property includes the nearby 767MW Vasiliko Power Station, where the three existing operating units have suffered serious damage and two more units currently under construction are also affected.

The plant provides 50% of the country's electricity. Power shortages are now affecting the whole of Southern Cyprus with rolling power cuts affecting Nicosia and other towns.

Cunningham Lindsey Middle East are already instructed in respect of the Vasiliko Power Station property damage and construction risk as well as sundry properties. A team of five people has already been deployed. This team will be reinforced in the coming days with Cunningham Lindsey's specialist power engineers and adjusters.
