Cunningham Lindsey's Bangkok office is currently closed due to Red Shirt protests

16 May 10

As reported in recent press, the Thai Government's patience has finally given way over the continued deadlock with the Red Shirt protestors and after over two months of disputes the military are currently trying to besiege the Red Shirt protest area in the middle of Bangkok's Rajprasong district.

Where the clashes are taking place is an area normally bustling with hotels, businesses, embassies, shopping malls and apartments. This area is now locked down and public transport has ceased.

With firebombs and homemade rockets being launched by the protestors, it is inevitable that damage will occur and there are already reports of damage to nearby housing, small commercial outlets and bank branches. Stuart Devine, our Regional Director for South-East Asia, has just reported that a convenience store on Rama IV Road is, at the time of writing, on fire. The Red Shirt protesters are threatening that if attempts are made to remove them from their protest camp, they will set fire to several well known high end shopping malls situated within the protest area.

As our office is on the edge of this area and heavy clashes and fatalities have been reported in close proximity, our Bangkok office is closed for the time being.

It will be appreciated that the safety of our colleagues remains the first priority. Nonetheless our team of adjusters are standing by to undertake assignments in the affected areas as soon as it is safe to do so and are contactable by mobile telephone.
